We have two master lists that include the same people (members of a trade organization).
We have two lists (our general list and one for just our insurance program) because some contacts will want to stay on our general list, but not want our insurance emails (and vs vs).
How can we sync the lists so that when new association members/subscribers are added, they’re added to both lists at once?
Thanks!
Hi Teresa!
You have a couple of options for accomplishing this!
Option 1: Master Automation
Create an automation that triggers when someone is added to either list:
- Trigger: “Subscribes to a list”
- Condition: Check if they’re on List A OR List B
- Action: Subscribe them to the other list automatically
Set up two versions - one for each direction of syncing.
(This is what I would recommend)
Option 2: Import with Multiple List Selection
When importing new members:
- During the import process, select BOTH lists in the “Add to Lists” section
- This adds all contacts to both lists simultaneously
Option 3: Bulk Management
For existing contacts:
- Create a segment of people on List A but not List B
- Use bulk actions to subscribe them to List B
- Repeat in reverse
With all three of these you should be covered with sorting your existing contacts and with contacts who join your contact base via import or organically!

Thank you so much, Alanna! Option 2 was what did it for us.
Our team appreciates you!
Hey there, you mentioned managing unsubscribes in your question so figured I’d chime in as well.
It’s important to note that if you send a campaign, anyone who unsubscribes will unsubscribe from all of the lists you selected when creating the campaign.
So if you want to keep unsubscribes separate, make sure to only send each kind of camapign to the one list.
You can also create a preference center, which will allow your subscribers to select which list(s) they want to be subscribed to. Then you can add this alongside you unsubscribe link to give people greater control (rather than only having an unsubscribe link).

Hello and thank you, Jacob! Yes, we’ll choose the specific list we want to use to keep our unsubscribes separated.
